The Five Elements in the Chinese Zodiac
Each zodiac animal is tied to one of the five elements, and each year adds another element on top — which is why the cycle is sixty years, not twelve.

Most people know their animal. Fewer know that the animal is only half the label: every year is an element plus an animal, and both change at different speeds.
The animal cycles every twelve years. The element cycles every ten: wood, fire, earth, metal, water, each appearing twice before repeating. Feed twelve and ten into a common cycle and you get sixty — the full stem-and-branch cycle the calendar has used for two thousand years.
The animal's own element
Separately from the year's element, each animal has a fixed element of its own, set by its earthly branch. This one never changes — a rabbit is always wood, whatever the year's element says.
| Animal | Branch | Element |
|---|---|---|
| Rat | 子 | Water |
| Ox | 丑 | Earth |
| Tiger | 寅 | Wood |
| Rabbit | 卯 | Wood |
| Dragon | 辰 | Earth |
| Snake | 巳 | Fire |
| Horse | 午 | Fire |
| Goat | 未 | Earth |
| Monkey | 申 | Metal |
| Rooster | 酉 | Metal |
| Dog | 戌 | Earth |
| Pig | 亥 | Water |
Two cycles, both running
The generating cycle goes wood feeds fire, fire makes earth (ash), earth bears metal, metal carries water, water grows wood. Each element produces the next; it is a closed loop of five steps.
The controlling cycle is the counterweight: wood parts earth, earth dams water, water quenches fire, fire melts metal, metal cuts wood. Also a closed loop, also five steps, running the other way.
Every statement in BaZi about balance is one of these two relationships applied to a particular chart — what feeds the day master, what drains it, what controls it and what it controls.
What this changes for you
Take two people born twelve years apart in the same animal. One is a wood tiger (1974), one is a fire tiger (1986). Same animal, same branch, different element above it, and traditionally a different reading.
This is also why 'I am a wood rabbit' is ambiguous unless you say which element you mean: the rabbit is always wood by branch, but the year element could be anything. When someone names a single element, they usually mean the year element — or, more precisely, their day master, which is a third thing entirely.
Our birth chart tool shows all four pillars with their elements side by side, which is the point where the element talk stops being abstract.
