Chinese Zodiac Compatibility: How the Pairs Actually Work
Zodiac compatibility is read from how the twelve animals sit relative to each other: some pair, some form triangles, some oppose.

Most compatibility pages hand you a grid of scores. That is a simplification of something more mechanical, and the mechanism is worth knowing because it explains where every one of those scores comes from.
Arrange the twelve animals in order around a circle. Every relationship in the system is a distance on that circle: six apart, four apart, or directly opposite.
Six pairs: the 六合
Certain animals are paired with a fixed partner across the circle. These are the 六合 pairs, traditionally described as complementary: each supplies what the other lacks.
The pairs are rat with ox, tiger with pig, rabbit with dog, dragon with rooster, snake with monkey, and horse with goat.
They skip around rather than following the order — the rule behind them is a fixed table, not something you can derive by counting.
| Pair | Traditional reading |
|---|---|
| Rat — Ox | cleverness grounded by patience |
| Tiger — Pig | force balanced by generosity |
| Rabbit — Dog | caution met by loyalty |
| Dragon — Rooster | ambition sharpened by precision |
| Snake — Monkey | depth matched by quickness |
| Horse — Goat | movement settled by care |
Four triangles: the 三合
Every fourth animal forms a set of three, called a 三合 or harmony triangle. Where the pairs describe two people, the triangles describe a working group: four sets of three, each sharing a common element.
Rat, dragon and monkey form the water group. Ox, snake and rooster form the metal group. Tiger, horse and dog form the fire group. Rabbit, goat and pig form the wood group.
In practice the triangles are what people mean when they say a group gets along. They are also why a compatibility chart can name three animals that suit you rather than one.
Six opposites: the 六冲
Every animal has an opposite, six positions away: rat and horse, ox and goat, tiger and monkey, rabbit and rooster, dragon and dog, snake and pig.
The 六冲 relationship is usually translated as clash, which overstates it. It means the two pull in different directions — the traditional image is two people trying to walk opposite ways while holding the same rope.
Clashes are not prohibitions. In classical reading they more often describe a relationship that takes deliberate effort than one that is doomed.
Why the animal alone is a blunt instrument
The animal is one of eight characters in a full chart. It is the year pillar's branch — the least personal of the four, since everyone born in a given year shares it.
A proper compatibility reading compares day pillars, which describe the two people themselves, and looks at month and hour as well. Two people whose animals clash can have compatible charts; two whose animals pair perfectly can have difficult ones.
So animal compatibility is a parlour game with real structure underneath: a reasonable first sketch and a poor final answer. That is also why this site does not publish a results grid, and why the reading we offer looks at the whole chart instead.
