Year of the Goat 2027: Dates, Element, and the January Trap

2027 is the Year of the Goat. It begins at Chinese New Year on 6 February 2027 and ends on 25 January 2028.

Updated 2026-11-02

The Year of the Goat starts on 6 February 2027 and ends on 25 January 2028, the day before the next new year. Anyone born inside that window is a goat.

This is the fire goat year — 丁未 in the stem-and-branch cycle. The previous fire goat was 1967; the next will be 2087.

Why January 2027 is not the goat

The year changes at Chinese New Year, not on 1 January. So everyone born between 1 January and 5 February 2027 still belongs to the horse, the animal that began on 17 February 2026.

This is the same trap as every other year, and it catches parents filling in forms and journalists writing about newborn celebrities in equal measure.

Goat years of the last century

The goat returns every twelve years. Recent ones: 1979, 1991, 2003, 2015, 2027. Every fourth goat is a fire goat only in the sense that the stem takes sixty years to come round — the element and the animal cycle at different rates.

The goat in the older reading

The branch 未 covers the hours between one and three in the afternoon — the slowest part of the day. The animal was originally a coordinate on the clock and the calendar; the personality traits came later, mostly from nineteenth-century popular writing.

In Chinese the character 羊 covers sheep, goat and ram alike, which is why translations disagree. There is no distinction in the original.

Traditional associations for the goat tend toward the domestic and the patient rather than the adventurous. Whether that describes anyone born in the year is a separate question — the chart has seven more characters.

Checking your own year

If your birthday falls near the end of January or early February, a lookup by calendar year will be wrong. Use the new year date for your own birth year instead.

Our zodiac tool takes a full birth date and resolves the boundary for you, and our 2027 new year article explains why the date moves around in the first place.
