Year of the Horse 2026: Dates, Element, and Who It Applies To

2026 is the Year of the Horse. It begins at Chinese New Year on 17 February 2026 and ends on 5 February 2027.

Updated 2026-11-02

The Year of the Horse starts on 17 February 2026, the date of Chinese New Year, and ends on 5 February 2027, the eve of the next new year. Anyone born inside that window belongs to the horse.

This is the fire horse year — 丙午 in the stem-and-branch cycle — which comes around once every sixty years. The last one was 1966; the next will be 2086.

The January and February trap

Babies born in the first six weeks of 2026 are not horses. Until 17 February the year is still the snake, which began in February 2025. A child born on 10 January 2026 is a snake; a child born on 20 February 2026 is a horse.

The same applies at the other end: someone born on 1 February 2027 is still a horse, because the goat year does not begin until 6 February.

This is the most common error in zodiac lookups, and it is why a lookup by calendar year alone is never quite enough.

What fire adds to the horse

The animal repeats every twelve years; the element repeats every ten. Together they cycle every sixty, which is why 2026 is not simply another horse year.

Recent horse years are all horse, but they are different horses: 1990 was earth, 2002 was water, 2014 was wood, and 2026 is fire. In the classical reading the element is the substance and the animal is the position — two people born in the same animal year can have very different charts because the element above it differs.

What the horse is associated with

Traditionally the horse is movement, distance and open ground — the branch 午, which also marks the hour around midday, when the sun is at its highest.

In popular writing the horse becomes a personality type: independent, impatient, fond of being in motion. That is a modern shorthand rather than the older use. The branch was a coordinate on a calendar, not a character description.

The more honest reading is that a horse year describes a certain kind of momentum, and whether that helps you depends on the rest of your chart — not on being born in it.

Are you a horse?

Horse years of the last century: 1930, 1942, 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002, 2014, 2026. If your birth date falls between a Chinese New Year and the next one in that list, the horse is your year animal.

For the exact boundary in any one year, check the new year date rather than the calendar year — our zodiac tool does this from a full birth date and also returns the element.
